Key elements in Maartens story are striving for success and dealing with bad luck in your, working and personal, life. Since 2010, Maarten works as a finance manager at Unilever and is currently financially responsible concerning the sale of Unilever-products towards Ahold (sales finance manager).

Maarten has his own foundation, the Maarten van der Weijden Foundation. In less than a year, the foundation has raised over 11 million euros for cancer research. Maarten swam for this the Eleven Cities Tour in 2018 and 2019, where he could not continue after 163 km in 2018 and in 2019 he swam the full tour of 195 km.

Op 21 augustus 2008 won Maarten van der Weijden olympisch goud op de tien kilometer openwaterzwemmen in Beijing. Dat markeerde het einde van een lange weg naar de top. In 2001 werd bij hem acute lymfatische leukemie geconstateerd. Na een serie zware behandelingen, waaronder een stamceltransplantatie, genas hij van zijn ziekte en pakte hij zijn loopbaan als wedstrijdzwemmer weer op.
